When Puberty Turned Our World Upside Down
When my son turned 14, puberty hit like a freight train. Testosterone surged through his body, and seemingly overnight, my gentle, kind boy disappeared. In his place was someone I barely recognized—aggressive, out of control, trapped in constant sensory overload.
Autistic symptoms that had been manageable suddenly escalated to crisis levels. Sensory reactions intensified. And then came the rule that nearly broke me: our entire family was no longer allowed to speak.
Seriously. My son developed pathological demand avoidance and insisted we all stop talking—enforcing his rule vigorously around the clock. I think it gave him a sense of control, or at least meant he didn't have to process auditory language when his nervous system had already reached its limit.
Have you ever tried to stop speaking, even just for a day? You need to ask your husband beside you something, but you know if you open your mouth, it could trigger an aggressive meltdown. It's just not worth the risk. You find yourself writing your question on a sticky note instead.
After my son smashed up a frying pan with a hammer, I tread very carefully around him. Our team—a behavior therapist, occupational therapist, pediatric neuropsychologist, and parent autism coach—was not enough to get us through this time.
The Day I Reached My Breaking Point
I reached my personal limit one day when my son took away my shoes because "they didn't belong on that shelf." He was becoming obsessive about where we all kept our belongings. I needed my shoes to go out, and they were just gone.
I had remained calm and patient for countless, exhausting days. But I could no longer cope.
I marched outside, opened my mouth, and screamed as loud as my body could scream. The sound tore through the quiet northern Canadian wilderness—so loud my husband and uncle, cutting firewood half a mile away, came running to see what was wrong.
There was nothing else I could do that day except cry.
But in the morning, I got out of bed and racked my brain for any last thing I could try. We had already exhausted every typical behavior management strategy, sensory regulation technique, and communication protocol designed for autism.
If you're reading this at 2am, exhausted and desperate for answers, I see you. I've been exactly where you are.
The Documentary That Planted a Seed
One memory surfaced with crystal clarity: a boy I'd seen over a decade earlier in David Suzuki's documentary The Nature of Things, on autism and the gut microbiome.
Even after all those years, my memory of that boy was as clear and sharp as fresh ink on a crisp new page. Nothing could ever erase those video recordings from my mind.
The documentary showed before-and-after footage of a young boy with autism who had difficulty with the most basic tasks. He was non-verbal and wasn't using the toilet on his own. After months of searching, his mother finally convinced a doctor to prescribe a short course of antibiotics targeting Clostridia difficile—a harmful bacteria that can overgrow in the gut and produce neurotoxins.
The transformation was undeniable. Within the first week of treatment, that boy could walk normally in a straight line. He instantly developed language. He could use the bathroom independently. In less than a week, he was talking to his family and rapidly progressing in his development.
But then it ended. It was only safe to take that antibiotic for two weeks. After the medication stopped, he kept some progress but his body once again became a victim of the bacterial imbalance in his digestive system. No further treatment. No new protocols. No direction to turn.
The Search for a New Path Forward
Now, a decade later and at the end of my rope, I began an obsessive search to see if any new research had emerged. Were there any new protocols for balancing the gut microbiome in autism? Any pathway forward upon which to place my weary feet?
On YouTube, I discovered that functional medicine doctors were successfully reducing autistic symptoms to a considerable degree with biomedical protocols. They weren't using one-size-fits-all approaches. Instead, they performed extensive lab testing to understand precisely what was happening with each child: vitamin deficiencies, heavy metals, mitochondrial function, digestive health, metabolic markers, and food sensitivities. They created comprehensive diet and nutrition plans, monitored results, and adjusted as needed.
The results? 20% to 100% reduction of symptoms.
This was exciting news—but my family lived in a small, isolated, remote community in northern Canada. The closest functional medicine doctor was over a thousand miles away. By the time my son was 14, we had used up all our savings on therapy. There was nobody close enough for us to turn to, and no money left to travel.
So I went back to YouTube, determined to figure this out on my own. It wasn't a question of desire—it was a matter of survival. My son was aggressive, scary, anxious, and out of control. His gut microbiome had fallen out of balance—harmful bacteria like certain Clostridia strains were overgrowing, producing neurotoxins that inflamed his gut and brain. Before my eyes, this dysbiosis was hijacking his nervous system, erasing his inherent human kindness.
The gentle nature of his true personality was now dominated by biochemical chaos. The thought of not living with my son made me not want to live anymore, yet it was also too hard to live with his condition as it was. I had no choice but to find a way forward.
The Microbiome Expert: A Game-Changing Discovery
Eventually, I came across Guy Daniels' YouTube channel: The Microbiome Expert. His channel explains how to heal the gut microbiome with prebiotics—not probiotics, but prebiotics.
On his website themicrobiomeexpert.com Guy offers downloadable protocols he has developed through extensive research. One of them is specifically designed for autism.
I tried it with my son.
One month after starting the protocol, my son no longer had ANY meltdowns. He was calmer. Our family was allowed to speak again. I was no longer concerned about aggression.
Two months later? We no longer needed an occupational therapist, behavior therapist, psychologist, or autism parent coach.
One year later? My son is more calm, polite, kind, mellow, content, and constructively engaged than any other teenager I have met. I still give him prebiotics in a smoothie or protein shake every morning.
Why This Works: The Gut-Brain-Behavior Connection
Here's what's happening at the biochemical level when the gut microbiome is out of balance in autism:
1. Gut dysbiosis (bacterial imbalance) → produces inflammatory compounds and neurotoxins
2. Leaky gut → allows these toxins into the bloodstream → triggers systemic inflammation
3. Inflammation crosses the blood-brain barrier → causes neuroinflammation
4. Neuroinflammation → worsens sensory processing issues, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, aggression, and communication challenges
When we introduce the right prebiotics:
1. Prebiotics feed beneficial bacteria like Akkermansia muciniphila and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii
2. These "superhero bacteria" multiply and produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)
3. SCFAs reduce gut inflammation → heal the gut lining → reduce systemic inflammation
4. Reduced neuroinflammation → symptoms decrease in severity
This isn't about "curing" autism. It's about removing the inflammatory burden that makes symptoms more severe. It's about giving the body the biochemical support it needs to function at its best.
Beyond Prebiotics: The Complete Protocol
In addition to following Guy Daniels' autism protocol, I also put my son on a gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free diet. I noticed that if he consumed sugar or chemical additives, it immediately affected his behavior in a negative way. My son was also given a precise assortment of specially chosen vitamins and supplements that I determined he needed at different stages, including vitamin D, chlorella, and MCT oil.
I also continued using behavioral strategies and communication supports to maintain our family's calm environment.
Important to understand: My son still has autism and other challenges. Diet and nutritional supplements are not a cure. But these interventions give the body the biochemical support it needs to do the best job it can. Gut microbiome healing, combined with dietary changes, particularly helps reduce the severity of sensory issues, digestive problems, and behavioral challenges.
The Real-World Test
After one year of being on prebiotics and following a strict diet, my son went on a youth trip for five days. During those five days, he ate what the other kids ate at restaurants—foods containing gluten, dairy, and sugar.
When he got home, my son was significantly irritable. He got angry and pointed his finger in my face several times—behaviors I hadn't seen in a year.
But here's the difference: I knew exactly what was happening. His body was detoxing from the wheat, sugar, and dairy. A few harmful bacteria had been fed and multiplied, temporarily throwing his system out of balance again.
Within a week of being back on his regular diet and prebiotics, he returned to the calm, mellow, chill state he'd maintained for the past year. Those few opportunistic bacteria? Their days were numbered.
This experience taught me that gut microbiome healing isn't a one-time fix—it requires ongoing consistency. But it also showed me how resilient the body becomes once you've established a healthy baseline.
Why You Haven't Heard More About Prebiotics
Guy Daniels has researched the gut microbiome extensively. He says prebiotics drive change in the gut at a much greater rate than probiotics. So why isn't this more common knowledge?
Because no one is making money selling prebiotics. We can buy prebiotic foods and ingredients at any grocery store or health food store. There's no patent, no prescription, no profit margin for pharmaceutical companies.
I asked ChatGPT: "How much money is made globally from probiotics?" The answer: $87.7 billion in 2023.
This is why probiotics are heavily marketed and widely known, while prebiotics—which you can purchase as simple food ingredients—remain relatively unknown in the autism community.
Don't get me wrong: there have been many studies on probiotics, and specific strains do help improve digestive health in autism.
But here's what Guy Daniels discovered: the true "superhero" bacteria with the greatest power to heal and rebalance the gut microbiome cannot survive in a gelatin capsule. They won't survive outside the body. They cannot be sold as probiotic supplements.
But that's not a problem. Know why?
Because Guy has identified the specific prebiotic fibers these superhero bacteria need to thrive. When we eat foods that feed these beneficial bacteria, they multiply naturally. They flourish. They take over the gut microbiome and bring it back into balance.
Bye-bye to the harmful bacteria causing autistic meltdowns. Down, down, down go symptoms like stimming, sensory meltdowns, and neurochemical imbalances that drive aggression, anxiety, and emotional shutdown.
Healthy gut bacteria reduce inflammation in the colon, which reduces inflammation in the brain. This can open up communication and speech pathways. The body shifts from a state of constant attack and suppression to finally relaxing.
And here's something remarkable: when the nervous system leaves its constant stress state and relaxes enough, primitive reflexes that many of us spend hours trying to integrate through therapy? They begin slowly and gently integrating on their own—just like they're supposed to.
What to Expect: The Realistic Timeline
Based on my experience and research, here's a realistic timeline for gut microbiome healing:
Weeks 1-2: Possible adjustment period as the microbiome shifts. You may see gas, bloating, or temporary behavior changes as harmful bacteria die off and beneficial bacteria establish themselves.
Weeks 3-4: First signs of calming. Meltdowns may become less intense or less frequent. You might notice improved sleep or digestion.
Months 2-3: Noticeable improvements in sensory regulation, emotional stability, and communication. This is when many families see significant behavioral changes.
6+ months: Sustained changes and continued progress in development—but this requires ongoing consistency with diet and supplements.
Important: If your child eats trigger foods (gluten, dairy, sugar, artificial additives), you may see temporary regression. This is the dysbiotic bacteria getting fed and multiplying again. Get back on track with the protocol, and symptoms will settle within days to a week.
How to Get Started
If you're able to, I recommend working with a functional medicine doctor, naturopath, or clinical professional who specializes in nutrition and biochemical protocols for autism. They can run comprehensive lab testing and create a truly personalized plan.
If that's not accessible to you—whether due to location, cost, or availability—here are steps you can take on your own:
1. Research Guy Daniels' protocols at themicrobiomeexpert.com and consider trying his autism-specific protocol
2. Start with dietary changes: Consider eliminating gluten, dairy, and refined sugar for 30 days to see if you notice improvements
3. Introduce prebiotic-rich foods gradually: Such as chia seeds, ground flax seeds, potatoes that have been cooled down, bananas, and oatmeal.
4. Track everything: Keep a food and behavior journal to identify patterns and triggers
5. Be patient and consistent: Gut healing takes time—give any protocol at least 4-6 weeks before evaluating results
6. Work with a coach: Consider hiring an autism coach who understands biochemical approaches to help you navigate implementation, manage picky eating, and stay consistent
The Challenges You'll Face (And How to Navigate Them)
I'm not going to pretend this is easy. Changing your child's diet while managing autism symptoms, picky eating, and daily life is genuinely hard.
You'll face:
· Picky eating resistance: Many autistic children have strong food preferences and sensory sensitivities around food
· Family skepticism: Relatives, teachers, or even medical professionals may dismiss nutritional approaches
· Overwhelm: Figuring out what to buy, how to prepare it, and how to get your child to actually eat it
· Inconsistency: Life happens—birthday parties, school events, travel—and maintaining the protocol gets challenging
This is exactly why I created my holistic autism coaching programs—to help families navigate these very real challenges with practical strategies and emotional support.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are prebiotics and how do they help autism?Prebiotics are specific types of fiber that feed beneficial bacteria in the gut. Unlike probiotics (which add bacteria), prebiotics nourish the beneficial bacteria already present, helping them multiply and restore balance. This reduces gut inflammation, which in turn reduces neuroinflammation and can decrease the severity of autism symptoms.
How long does it take to see results from gut healing in autism? Most families notice initial changes within 3-4 weeks, with more significant improvements appearing around 2-3 months. However, every child is different, and consistency is key. Some children respond quickly; others take longer.
Can prebiotics cure autism? No. Prebiotics and gut healing do not cure autism. However, they can significantly reduce the severity of certain symptoms—particularly sensory issues, behavioral challenges, digestive problems, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation—by addressing underlying inflammation and biochemical imbalances.
What's the difference between prebiotics and probiotics for autism?Probiotics add specific bacterial strains to the gut, while prebiotics feed the beneficial bacteria already there. Research suggests prebiotics may drive more significant and lasting change because they support the growth of bacteria that can't survive in supplement form—the true "superhero" strains that have the most powerful healing effects.
What if my child is an extremely picky eater? This is one of the most common challenges, and it's something I help families navigate in my coaching programs. We start slowly, use sensory-friendly strategies, and find creative ways to introduce prebiotic foods and supplements. Many prebiotics can be added to smoothies, and there are supplement forms available for children who won't eat prebiotic-rich foods.
Final Thoughts: There Is Hope
